Let's start at the very beginning: Sarah was a complete surprise here at Draconia Keep. Sarah's dam, Sassy, is 26 years old. I had "traded" horses with a friend of mine for the year to put her foundering mare on a dry lot here at Draconia Keep which my friend doesn't have. Because my friend has a lush pasture and Sassy can be hard keeper, it seemed like the perfect situation.

On April 21st, my friend called and said, "You know that old mare?" I braced myself, fearing the worst. After all, Sassy is 26. I murmured something incoherent, and my friend said, "She had a foal."

WHAT?! I thought briefly, a late April Fool's trick? No, because my friend isn't like that.

So I flew over there, and the rest of the day, we spent making sure the foal had enough colostrum and the next few days, we held our breath and prayed. Sassy was thin as she always was, and combined with her age, she was barely making enough milk to sustain the foal.

We doubled and then tripled her grain as quickly as we dared, had the vets out several times in the first week, (Sassy retained part of the placenta and despite being flushed and given antibiotics, ended up with a horrible infection on top of everything else) and today you'd never know anything had ever been wrong.

Sarah is our "Miracle Child", and we couldn't be more pleased with her. I had purchased Sassy originally as a riding mare, and we'd bred her a couple of years before she got pregnant to Freddie, hoping to retain her old bloodlines, but we did no extraordinary measures because of her age. Apparently, Freddie and Sassy decided to try one time over the fence, and, thus, we have Sarah. <G>

What's in a name?

Lady Derringer is named after the small, petite handgun designed by a woman *for* a woman (Sassy certainly had plans for Tori!) with "Lady" as a nod to the royal/British/King Arthur theme of Draconia Keep.

But why name her after a gun? Sadly, Tori's dad has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. As a note of respect and honour to him, Tori wanted her dad to name one of her foals. The two names that he liked were Lady Derringer for a filly and Winchester for a colt. We were lucky and we were able to use both names.

Pedigree: Speaks for itself. <G> Sassy's old bloodlines aren't often found that close up anymore.

Temperament:

Sarah is fun, nosy, demanding of attention, incredibly smart--everything that her dam and sire are. I only wish her dam were ten years younger so that I could repeat the cross!!

AND can this Lady trot! Just like her siblings, Sarah floats when she trots, going almost level in the pasture. She is simply, in a word, AWESOME! <G>
